Installation process
Typically, a sump pump installation takes about 5 hours to 8 hours to complete. Excavation time is based on the thickness of your concrete slab. Prior to digging, we don’t know how thick your slab or how deep your foundation wall is (Don’t worry, it doesn’t change your quoted price) which is where it gets tricky for us. The job may also require electrical work, as a dedicated outlet near the pump, with 20A service is preferred. If you require electrical, we can refer you to a licensed electrician. On the day of installation, if a dedicated outlet is not available, we will provide a heavy duty extension cord for use until your electrician can install the outlet.
Installation involves removal of concrete, excavation of a hole in your basement floor approx. 2 feet around by 3 feet deep. The location we usually choose is the lowest point of your basement or where you have water entering. Once excavated, we insert a sump pump pit liner constructed of rigid polyethylene with a tight fitting lid and back fill the area with gravel and cement it in, flush with your floor.
We then install the pump, a high quality Zoeller unit that we guarantee for 5 years (parts and labor). From that point, we connect it to 1 1/2 inch rigid pvc (schedule 40) and create your discharge line. Depending on your home, the discharge line will either exit above or below ground.
Below ground installations will be buried, below the frost line, with a discharge pop-up located approx. 10′ from your home. The pop-up is level with the ground, so it doesn’t present a problem for mowing or create a tripping hazard.
Above ground installations will include a freeze guard, and be piped to a low point in the yard at least 10 feet from the home. Hardscape, patios or large trees & shrubs near the discharge placement generally create the need to stay above ground.
Backup solutions
Depending on your situation, you should consider whether you are going to require a backup solution.
A backup pump is necessary if your primary sump pump fails, electric goes out or you get large quantities of water that a single pump cannot handle. We offer several models that come with a backup battery, which means you can continue to operate your sump pump even if there’s no power. When a generator is available, we prefer to add an additional electric pump, as they are less expensive and more efficient. The battery backup units include an automatic battery trickle charger and notification panel, which charges the battery until it reaches its full capacity.
